From the heart of Burns Country in South West Scotland, Flew The Arrow is the poetic embodiment of Folk Singer, Guitarist and Songwriter, Lee McGilvray, also the creator and curator of Glasgow’s award-winning Folk Club, Gathering South Sessions, having won ‘Folk Club of the Year’ at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards 2023. Lee has forged a path in the Scottish music community for the past decade, having immersed himself in its festivals and event culture and performed to audiences throughout, connecting his resonance and stories to all who lend an ear.
Following his debut EP ‘Trossach’ in 2019 with Electric Honey Records and 23rd Precinct Publishing, his first Double A-Side singles ‘Huntress/The Warmth & The Weight’, released independently on vinyl in 2022 thanks to a successful crowdfunder as part of Creative Scotland’s Crowdmatch Programme, were a truer insight into the concept of the flight of the arrow and Lee’s dedication to his songcraft and storytelling.
That same year saw Flew The Arrow collaborate with Celtic Dub pioneers An Dannsa Dub with a special single release of a song written by Lee, titled ‘My Blood Runs Deep’ (now over 50’000 streams), and featured on their debut album ‘Air an Turas’. Dubbed ‘Future Dub from Ancient Scotland’.
His most recent release in 2024 saw his long-awaited song ‘Follow Your Bliss’ come to life with a vibrant arrangement of traditional sounds and modern Trad influence. The flight of the arrow now leads to a debut album as Lee sets his heart on further contributing to his culture and tradition in songcraft and making his mark in the Folk realm.
Having supported the likes of Ye Vagabonds, The Langan Band, and artists from across the pond such as Daniel Romano, Horse Feathers, Siv Jakobsen and Langhorn Slim, to name a few, Lee has nestled himself into the festival community around the central belt with regular performances over the past seven years at Knockengorroch, Eden, Kelburn Garden Party and Doune The Rabbit Hole as well as other small festivals this year further north and south such as Solas Festival and a return to his hometown for a long-awaited event at the new Fresh Ayr Folk Festival.
Other notable performances include:
The launch of the Resonate Music Conference in Glasgow’s Arches in 2018 and being Resonates ‘Artist of the Week’
Performing as part of Celtic Connections ‘Hazy Recollections’ shows the same year
Celtic Connections performance in Broadcast 2019
Supporting Ye Vagabonds in 2019 in The Blue Arrow and The Langan Band in 2021 in Penrith
Being one of few chosen acts for ‘Scotland Trending’ for Perth Festival of the Arts in collaboration with Creative Scotland 2021
Multiple performances on The Danny Kyle Stage for Celtic Connections
This year sees Flew The Arrow as part of PCL Presents’ ‘Central Belters’ programme as well as the new Fresh Ayr Folk Festival in August and support Folk legend Martin Carthy in Kirkcaldy Acoustic Music Club in September.
Following in the footsteps of such prolific artists such as Dick Gaughan, Nic Jones, Archie Fisher, John Martyn, Ewan McAll, and modern balladeer Ewan McLennan, Flew The Arrow is forging his own place in the tapestry of Folk and Traditional music in Scotland, knowing that his songs will touch the hearts and minds of all who care to listen.
“Flew The Arrow fills the room with warm timbres of his acoustic guitar and a soft voice that bristles just lightly with an Ayrshire twang, crafting earnest narratives of love and loss from romantic landscapes, who’s imagery weaves through each song like a subtle and haunting poem. His presence cuts a friendly, laid back intimacy, introducing each song with genuine enthusiasm.”

The changing seasons and vibrant nature surrounding us has always been a pure source of inspiration and perspective in my life and is something I’ve always been drawn towards in my writing, as many a muso has. These songs are a collection of ones old and new, woven together as a melodic and lyrical journey through the ever-changing seasons, from the birth of spring time to the dead of winter, which seeks to find the heads and hearts of true listeners and share solace in finding the beauty around us in a disconnected world.
The title ‘Trossach’ is lent from the encapsulating mountains and forest area that surround us just north of Glasgow which I regularly gaze upon from the top of Queens Park in Southside, and reminds me of the perplexing weight of the world and the deep beauty of nature around us, in turn, easing my mind from the calamity of city living and opening the doors for inspiration.
